 As a young man with a successful salon in The Netherlands in the 1960's, Paul's creativity was challenged to go beyond chemically based beauty products, which were used almost exclusively at that time. Consulting with Dutch herbal master Mrs. Herma Eeftink, who kindly tutored him, Paul developed his first non-emulsified shampoo. He tested it on his eager customers at shampoo parties at night, and they loved it.
Being a novice in the shampoo business, Paul took the advice of a cosmetic chemist who urged him to add chemical emulsifiers so the product would look better. But Paul's clients immediately protested that the improved formula did not produce the same fine results and feel. He changed the formula back to the original and never changed again. He learned to carefully listen to the wishes of consumers and not to what some chemists were telling him.
In the years that followed, Paul introduced many new products, always listening to the consumer and his own conscience. Paul insists on the highest quality, and the purest and safest natural ingredients. He demonstrates time after time that Nature does indeed know what is best for us.
Paul incorporated a family-secret herbal extract into his products, which is called LevensESSENTIE (In Dutch: Essence of Life). His grand-mom and mother told him about their skin care discoveries using this unique herbal extract. They used it for their homemade skin & hair-care formulations for almost a century. Their formulations were very successful and had lots of happy followers. Paul believed that this herbal extract could benefit complexions around the world; so this fresh, organically grown herbal extract, LevensESSENTIE, became an integral part of all his formulations.
Paul never wanted to create the biggest cosmetic company in the world but he strives to create one of the best. His fights helped influence the cosmetic industry for the better. Today, Paul's company continues to create new product innovations for the American market place, as well as those in Japan, China and some countries in Europe. Do Paul Penders products contain preservatives?
To make sure cosmetics stay free from contaminants when they are used over a period of time, preservatives are needed to help keep them fresh. Paul Penders uses a preservative system made from Vitamins A, C & E, Grapefruit Extract and Acetic Acid. We find it very effective and don't need chemicals like the urea's, methyl, propyl & butyl parabens (to name just a few).
I don't want to use products made with animal ingredients. Does PAUL PENDERS use animal ingredients?
Principally, Paul Penders does not use animal-derived products or by-products (this includes beeswax, lanolin, silk and honey) except carmine. Carmine is a natural pigment used for our lipsticks, and is the only red natural color the FDA allows besides using chemical FD & C colors, which we at Paul Penders refuse to use.
Did Paul Penders test his products on animals?
We are unique in having a 25-year commitment to an emotionally driven, heartfelt policy of never! using animal-tests. These are not just "politically correct" words from marketers. FD&C colors? Are they really potential health hazards?
