Traditionally, saw palmetto was utilized for its pronounced effect on the urino-genital tracts of both men and women, and particularly on the prostate gland. Case Studies
According to a University of Chicago study, BPH is a common health issue that affects 8% of all men at the age of 40, some 60% of men in their 70s and 90% of those greater than 80 years of age. One-fourth of these men will develop moderate to severe lower urinary tract symptoms that greatly affect their quality of life. “Evidence suggests that the use of saw palmetto leads to improvements in urinary function for those suffering from BPH.”(1)
Another U. of Chicago study found that saw palmetto extract (Serenoa repens) significantly reduces the symptoms of BPH, increases urinary flow, improves the quality of life and is well tolerated. Analysis of the overall clinical database indicated that the “extract of S. repens may be considered a viable first-line therapy for treating LUTS.”(2)
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial at the School of Public Health in Shanghai, 12 weeks of intervention showed that the mean maximum urinary flow rate was significantly higher in the treatment group than in the control group.(3)
Researchers in France compared a saw palmetto extract with finasteride, the conventional BPH drug. The study involved 1,098 men diagnosed with BPH, and researchers concluded that both treatments relieved BPH symptoms in about two-thirds of the men. However, while the finasteride reduced the prostate size, it also decreased sex drive and potency, unlike saw palmetto extract.(4)
