The plant from which the medicinal herb known as False Unicorn Root is obtained is known to botanists as chamaelirium luteum. As an herbaceous plant, it can be categorized with true natural herbs; however, the useful part is of course the roots, not bulk chamaelirium luteum leaves.

The plant from which c/s false unicorn root is obtained is a perennial native to the U.S.; it grows primarily in the woodlands east of the Mississippi River, flowering in the late spring. It is one of the more commonly used native American herbs; traditionally, Iroquois and Algonquin-speaking peoples used it as a diuretic and to treat disorders of the reproductive system of both women and men.

Dried false unicorn root is either cut up or ground into a powder and made into a decoction by boiling it for about a quarter of an hour. The tea made from the dried herbs was drunk by women who were having difficulty during pregnancy and was believed to help in the prevention of miscarriage.
