Bromelain is a general name given to a family of sulfhydryl-containing, protein digesting (proteolytic) enzymes obtained from Ananas comosus, the pineapple plant. Bromelain's primary component is a sulfhydryl proteolytic fraction. It also contains a peroxidase, acid phosphatase, several protease inhibitors and organically bound calcium. Since its introduction in 1957, Bromelain supplements have been used in a variety of conditions including arthritis, digestive dysfunction, allergies, musculoskeletal injuries, immune disorders and wound healing.
Bromelain is commonly used as a digestive aid in those with disorders related to impaired digestive function. It has been found to be active both in the acid environment of the stomach and the alkaline environment of the small intestine.
Bromelain is a natural anti-inflammatory making it a valuable supplement in the relief and pain management of arthritis and related conditions of the joint. It blocks the production of compounds that can cause swelling and pain and reduces certain immune antigen compounds that can lead to arthritis, resulting in reduction of pain and improved mobility. Bromelain is used to aid in recovery from surgery and athletic injuries, as well as in the relief of inflammatory illnesses like sinusitis, tendonitis and phlebitis, hemorrhoids, osteoarthritis, gout and ulcerative colitis.

Bromelain can also be used as a topical preparation. It contains a non-proteolytic compound called escharase that helps to eliminate burn debris and speed wound healing in soft tissue burns and injuries. Incidence of infection is also reduced.

Bromelain helps increase the absorption of antibiotics and other drugs. Combined Bromelain and antibiotic therapy has shown to be more effective than antibiotics alone and Bromelain is often prescribed along with other drugs due to its ability to increase absorption.
