This test checks for glucose in the urine. Glucose is not normally found in the urine; however, very small amounts may be found after the ingestion of large amounts of sweets. In most cases, any glucose found in a random urine sample should be investigated. Glucose in the urine is a warning signal for diabetes.

There are two principal types of diabetes -Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 Diabetes is caused by destruction of cells in the pancreas. It is a severe, chronic form of diabetes, that is caused by insufficient production of insulin and results in an abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. The disease, which typically appears in childhood or adolescence, is characterized by increased sugar levels in the blood and urine, excessive thirst, frequent urination, acidosis, and wasting.
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. This form typically appears first in adulthood and is exacerbated by obesity and an inactive lifestyle. Type 2 diabetes often has no symptoms, is usually diagnosed by tests that indicate glucose intolerance, and is most effectively treated with changes in diet and an exercise regimen. The meal plan for a person with diabetes is the same as anyone else. It should be low in fat with moderate amounts of protein and contain starches, like those in beans, vegetables and grains (such as breads, cereals, noodles and rice). Exercise helps the body's cells take in blood sugar. Even a total of just 30 minutes of exercise weekly broken down into short sessions can make a big difference. Losing weight is another big part of diabetes treatment. As you lose weight, your body uses insulin better. The best way to lose weight is to exercise and follow a healthy meal plan. With a healthy meal plan, you eat will eat less calories, filling up on low fat foods.
SUGGESTED USAGE
Dip reagent end of strip in FRESH, well mixed urine and remove immediately. (Or, wet reagent area by passing through urine stream.) While removing, run the edge of the strip against the rim of the urine container to remove excess urine. Compare the test area with the color chart at the time specified (30 seconds).
