How It Works
Long term exposure to environmental toxins, including heavy metals, has been associated with adverse health effects. Exposure may occur through foods, contaminated drinking water, and polluted air. For example, cadmium is known to have toxic effects on the human body. Cadmium and cadmium compounds are used in batteries, as a pigment in paint, and as a fungicide. The greatest exposure to cadmium for nonsmokers is through foods grown in contaminated soil, particularly grain products, potatoes, and other vegetables. Mercury is a highly toxic element that is found in the environment both naturally and as an introduced contaminant. The greatest exposure to mercury is through the consumption of contaminated fish. Mercury released through mining, industrial processing, and as medical waste can enter the atmosphere, to be deposited through rainfall in water systems over a wide geographic area. Once in the atmosphere, mercury can circulate for years.
Humifulvate, an extract from Hungarian peat, is a mixture of humic acid, fulvic acid and phenolic acids. These acids are organic compounds that act as organic mineral carriers and detoxifiers. Their beneficial effects are due to their ability to bind, or chelate (from the Greek word chele, meaning claw) heavy metals that are then excreted by the body. However, the chelation is selective. Humifulvate does not cause depletion of beneficial minerals.
In a recent laboratory study, humic and fulvic acids (as dissolved organic carbon) in water both bound to and limited uptake of cadmium. In comparison to placebo, cadmium retention in the kidneys was reduced by 46%, 24 hours after administration. A study of mercury uptake in the salmon eggs found that mercury levels were reduced by 44% when humic acid was present. In a separate study specifically on Humifulvate (in combination with trace minerals) in a laboratory setting, Humifulvate was associated with a dose dependent increase in mercury excretion, meaning more mercury was excreted from the body.
Administration of Humifulvate (in combination with trace minerals) was examined in men who had experienced occupational exposure to cadmium for 3 to 12 years. Baseline blood and urine cadmium values were twice the level of men in the control group living in the same urban area. After six weeks of receiving Humifulvate, blood cadmium levels decreased significantly.
The effect of Humifulvate on lead levels has also been examined. Sixty volunteers with serum lead levels exceeding 1 µmol/l participated in a 12 week open label trial. At the conclusion of the study period, the mean blood lead level reduction was 8.4%.
Clinical trials have reported only mild gastrointestinal effects. No significant adverse effects have been noted to date.
SUMMARY
In both clinical and laboratory settings, Humifulvate, the key ingredient in Metal Magnet, has been associated with a reduction in blood levels of heavy metals. The specific heavy metals that were examined in the research trials of humifulvate [the key ingredient in Metal Magnet] were mercury, cadmium, and lead.
Mercury is primarily excreted via the fecal route. Cadmium and lead studies have looked at serum level reductions, although a new study that has not yet been published found increased mercury, lead and cadmium excretion via feces in a small human clinical trial.
We are unable to locate research that has examined a percentage of excretion in urine, feces or sweat.
The researchers who work with humifulvate are based in Hungary and access to data that has been translated into English is limited. However, from the data we have been able to review it appears that the primary excretion pathway is through feces.
Regarding Metal Magnet, why do we recommend not exceeding three 8-week periods in one year? Is it safe to take the product more frequently?
When Metal Magnet was being formulated, our Medical Communications and Education department contacted the Hungarian researchers who had initially studied the humifulvate complex, regarding the suggested dosage and product safety.
The scientists replied that a six month toxicology test (dogs) did not find any issues, and in ten years of research they have not seen any significant side effects. However, when first applying to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for permission to market this product in the United States, the FDA requested that the period of use for humifulvate-containing supplements not exceed 8 weeks. We, therefore, followed this recommendation.
Later, the researchers sent new data to the FDA requesting that the period of use be extended to up to six months. The FDA did not oppose this suggestion. We have elected, though, to keep our original recommendation of no more than three 8-week periods of use in one year unless at the direction of a healthcare practitioner. If a doctor is comfortable recommending Metal Magnet for longer periods of time, we have no reason to believe it unsafe.
