Each tablet or two capsules of Doctor`s Choice for Joint Health #01738/01741) contains about 0.36 mg glycyrrhizic acid (2 mg x 18% = 0.36 mg).1 Clinical studies have indicated that excess intake of licorice or glycyrrhizic acid is associated with sodium retention, potassium loss, and increased blood pressure. However, the lowest observed adverse effect level for glycyrrhizic acid is 100 mg per day. It has also been estimated that the daily dietary intake of glycyrrhizic acid is 1 to 10 mg in several countries.2 Therefore, a daily intake of 10 mg of glycyrrhizic acid would be a safe dose for most healthy adults. When Doctor`s Choice for Joint Health is taken as recommended, the amount of glycyrrhizic acid ingested is too small an amount to cause significant side effects.
