Taurine 1000 - Antioxidant Amino Acid, USP Grade, 100 caps, (Jarrow Formulas)

Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid chemically known as beta-aminoethanesulfonic acid. Taurine is a metabolite of the amino acids methionine and cysteine and is found in most cells.

As an antioxidant, taurine is used to quench hypochlorite secreted by leukocyte immune cells. Taurine also aids in osmoregulation (maintenance of proper concentrations of ions) inside the cell. Taurine’s other biological functions include cellular growth, membrane stabilization, sperm motility, bile acid conjugation and neurotransmission.

Taurine may also benefit athletic performance as it acts as an insulin mimetic, thereby allowing for better glucose deposition into muscles.

SUGGESTED USAGE
Take one capsule per day, or as directed by your qualified health care consultant.

Keep out of reach of children.

FAQ
Why doesn’t your Taurine product have an “L” in front, i.e., shouldn’t it be listed as “L-taurine”? Other companies I’ve seen have it listed this way.
We have seen other companies list their taurine as “L-taurine” on their labels as well. However, this is absolutely incorrect. There is no such thing as “L-taurine”; it is simply “taurine.” A quick chemistry review may be in order: the concept of optical isomerism. Optical isomers are compounds that are mirror images of each other, but cannot be superimposed on one another. These asymmetric compounds are referred to in chemistry as “chiral” compounds, with “chiral” referring to “handedness.” This concept is analogous to your left and right hands.

Place one hand on top of the other and the thumbs extend on opposite sides. The same concept holds true for a chiral compound such as the amino acid L-lysine. D-lysine is its mirror image. However, no matter how your position the molecules, neither can be superimposed on the other. This is because, as chiral compounds, they have the same connectivity, but differ in their spatial arrangements.

Another way to know that a compound is chiral is if the central carbon atom has four different substituents or groups attached to it. This is the case for the amino acid lysine, which means it has both an L form and a D form. Returning to taurine, it is not a chiral compound. No mirror image exists for it; two of the substituents around the central carbon are the same (i.e. they’re both hydrogen), which violates the rule that chiral compounds must have four different substituents. Therefore, the “L” designation does not apply in this case.

Is the taurine in your Taurine 1000 product derived from animal sources?
The taurine raw material is completely synthesized from non-animal sources. However, the capsule for this product is made of gelatin, which is an animal-derived protein.

Is taurine an amino acid?
While taurine is commonly referred to as an amino acid, this is not, technically speaking, correct. This is because amino acids are carboxylic acids having an amine group. Since taurine is not a carboxylic acid, but a sulfonic acid (with an amino group), it is not an amino acid, in the classical sense. Moreover, it is not proteinogenic, i.e., it is not incorporated into protein structures in the body. It is more accurate to refer to taurine as a “beta aminosulfonic acid.”
